R & B singer Toni Braxton has had her share of financial trouble in recent years. Starring in a reality show that follows her family through their music careers, Braxton really hasn’t made money from any hit records in years. Over time, she found herself behind hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt obligations.
The Hard Road To Relief
Toni Braxton filed for Chapter 7 in 2010 to help resolve her mounting debt burden. First claiming her debts exceeded millions, Braxton reportedly owes money to big name creditors such as Four Seasons Hotels, DirecTV, Neiman Marcus, Tiffany and Co., and American Express. As the courts began processing her case, the appointed trustee became suspicious of some of her actions.
Braxton is now being accused of bankruptcy fraud for allegedly giving her estranged husband $53,490 during the course of her case. The trustee says this money was earmarked to be used to pay creditors, and is now suing Braxton for the money to be returned to satisfy debt obligations. However, Braxton’s representative says that, “all of the payments made to Lewis prior to Toni’s bankruptcy filing were appropriate transfers for reasonable and necessary personal and business expenses in the ordinary course of her business.”
