Bankruptcy Basics: Getting a New Bank Account

If you’re in the Tampa bankruptcy process, you might be worried about your ability to get just a simple checking account after you’ve been declared bankrupt.  If you recently declared bankruptcy, and are getting turned down time and time again when applying for a bank account, you may be starting to panic.  Don’t worry!  There’s no need to stress because we have some good news.  You can get a bank account after filing for bankruptcy.  And, do you know what?  It doesn’t have to be an expensive account either!

How to Do It

We don’t endorse specific products or services here on our blog, so we aren’t going to mention any names.  However, there are a number of reputable online services that provide bank accounts specifically designed for people who have recently filed.  This knowledge is one of those bankruptcy basics you have to know about!

A simple web search is all you need to do to get started.  A few words of advice:

  • Don’t let anyone convince you that a credit check is necessary for opening up a bank account.  This claim is simply not true.  There are services out there that will give you a checking account without performing a credit check.  After all, a credit check will cost you money, and it’s not going to be in your favor.  Don’t fall for this one!
  • Bad credit history is no reason for not having a checking account.  Because checking accounts operate on a debit system, there’s no reason for credit to be a part of the decision-making process.  Of course, banks are free to create their own specific rules and guidelines, but you shouldn’t feel like you have to play by the rules of every single bank.  Find the bank that works for you!
